James Simon DPhil, MBA James is CEO and a co-founder of ExBiome BV. He has spent 15 years founding and leading new ventures. He was interim MD at hVivo Ltd in London, where he launched a new business unit and raised significant financing on AIM. Prior to this he co-founded and was CEO of Viroclinics Biosciences BV, and was COO at ViroNovative BV, both spin-out companies from Erasmus MC, Netherlands. He started his commercial career with the Boston Consulting Group in its London office, concentrating on the biopharmaceutical sector. James gained a BA in Biochemistry and a DPhil from the University of Oxford and an MBA from the Wharton Business School, where he majored in Health Care Management.
Michiel Pegtel PhD Michiel is CSO and co-founder of ExBiome BV. He is an Assistant Professor at the VUmc Cancer Centre in Amsterdam, where he focuses on exosome biology and small RNA biomarkers. Michiel has over 30 publications in major peer-reviewed journals, is on the editorial board of the journal of extracellular vesicles (JEV), and was awarded the prestigious Beijerinck Premium from the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in 2011 for pioneering work on small RNA secretion. Previously, he worked at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, USA) and obtained his PhD from Tufts University (Boston, USA) collaborating with members of the Broad Institute (Cambridge Massachusetts).
Danijela Koppers-Lalic PhD Danijela is Head of diagnostic research and co-founder of ExBiome BV. She is an Assistant Professor at the Neuro-oncology Research Group at VUmc Cancer Center in Amsterdam, where her research is on small non-coding RNAs as cancer messengers. Danijela brings to the team more than 10 years’ experience in molecular biology, specializing on the analysis of small RNA sequences derived by next generation sequencing, for which she has developed a number of tools. She has authored more than 20 papers in major peer reviewed journals and she completed her PhD at Leiden University and a postdoc at Cambridge University on Herpesviruses.
Michael Hackenberg PhD Michael is co-founder and advisor to ExBiome BV. He is an Associate Professor at the Genetics Department of the University of Granada (Spain) where he specializes on the data analysis and interpretation of high-throughput sequencing experiments with small RNAs and DNA methylation as his main focus, and has developed several widely used tools and databases for this. He has lectured for over 10 years in Genetics and Bioinformatics, and co-edited the book “Bioinformatics for High Throughput Sequencing” (Springer Publishing).
Johan de Rooij PhD Johan is an MBI candidate performing business analysis for Exbiome BV. He is an Assistant Professor at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, where his research group investigates mechanotransduction in tissue development and disease. Johan has published more than 40 articles in major peer-reviewed journals including “Nature” and “Cell”. He has worked at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, the Netherlands Cancer Institute and The Hubrecht Institute. Besides in academic science, he is actively involved in life-science investments as part of a family investment company and aims to expand his activities in the life-science sector.
